Cook County Highway Department 2010 Bridge vector digital data withheld Bridge This file is a digital geospatial Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ArcGIS feature class that contains point features of Cook County Highway Department (CCHD) bridges in Cook County, Illinois. This feature class locates and describes 188 bridges in the County and includes only those bridges that are wholly contained within the Cook County Highway Department jurisdiction. This feature class is current as of 2002-2003. This dataset is projected using the Transverse Mercator map projection. The grid coordinate system used is the Illinois State Plane Coordinate System (Zone Number 1201), NAD83 with ground coordinates expressed in U.S. Survey Feet. The purpose of the feature class is to describe and locate bridges in Cook, County, Illinois and it was initially developed as part of a proof of concept to demonstrate the uses of GIS within the larger department. The Cook County Highway Department (CCHD) is fully responsible for the inspection & maintenance of 95 bridges. They also have partial maintenance of approximately 40 other bridges, which have a shared responsibility with either a railroad, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), or the Illinois Tollway. A safety inspection of these bridges is performed every two years as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration. The inspection interval for some of these structures has been increased to four (4) years as deemed appropriate by IDOT, depending on the age, condition, and inspection ratings of the bridge. IDOT is the agency responsible for administering the bridge inspection program in Illinois. Local agencies such as CCHD ensure that their bridges are inspected at the required interval. Inspection reports resulting from these inspections are submitted to IDOT for their inclusion in the bridge inspection database. Bridges exhibiting defects are analyzed to determine their load carrying capacity. They are load posted with IDOT's concurrence if found to be deficient. Cook County currently has one (1) bridge that falls into this category of requiring load posting. This is the Quentin Road Bridge over Salt Creek Branch (north of Dundee Road). Due to the load posting, certain types and weights of trucks are prohibited from using this bridge. In addition to the biennial safety inspections mentioned above, underwater inspections are required for certain bridges and are required every five (5) years. CCHD has eleven (11) bridges that require this inspection type. The last underwater inspections were performed in 2005 and are due again in 2010. Also, CCHD has four (4) truss bridges over the Cal-Sag Channel that are required to undergo a fracture critical inspection every two (2) years. The last inspections were performed in 2006 and are due again in 2008. A fracture critical member is defined as a tension member of a steel bridge whose failure would probably cause a portion or the entire bridge to collapse. Bridges that contain fracture critical members are fracture critical bridges. Some recently completed and ongoing bridge projects by the Cook County Highway Department include the Central Avenue Bridge from I-55 to 39th Street, Lake-Cook Road over the Slough East of Rand Road, Sunset Ridge Road over the Chicago River in Northbrook, 167th Street over I-57, and Roselle Road over the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway Every year we have several bridges that undergo repairs. Depending on the condition, some undergo extensive rehabilitation or reconstruction. Occasionally, new structures are constructed and added to our system as roadways are reconstructed. They are currently preparing plans to replace several bridges in the near future. Among these are the Potter Road Bridge over Framer's Creek and the Quentin Road Bridge over Salt Creek Branch (north of Dundee Road and mentioned above as load posted). This dataset was also created to enhance an existing enterprise-wide GIS database that supports current and proposed applications involving executive decision and policy development, public access, land records management, planimetric mapping, infrastructure management, economic development, engineering, map production, and various land data analyses.
